The Beginning
When I garden I consider several things-
The soil makeup, where the sun shines, what time the sun will shine in that very spot and for how long it will shine there. I spend time reading, learning/researching the plants most suitable for that section of land.
I determine water consumption and frequency of water, (how many times per day) and how much per time.
I read up on the possibility of critters and bugs attracted to my plant choices and what disease each plant is prone to.
I think about which colors that I want to eventually see in that spot and I consider the fragrance of selected plants. Nothing too strong near a seating area or a window.
I focus on the grand plan, The Look. The Maintenance.
Once decided, then I look for the best deals at different locations that sell the plant and who gives what guarantees.
All of this goes on in my head, and my heart.
Then I do the physical work. Up and down, bending, twisting lifting, digging. It is so good for my body.
When doing this I get dirty, sweaty, my nails are a mess. I love the feeling of dirt between my fingers. I love the smell of the dirt. I am in touch with divine nature, the complexity and the simplicity all at the same time.
It’s my time, just me. Once all is decided and in place, my husband jumps in to help. He maintains the sprinkler system and does the heavy lifting. I appreciate all of this so much. It’s teamwork and we love it. When the planting is done, it is he who installs the Malibu lights so we can enjoy our flower garden and its fragrance even in the evening.
The evolution of flowers and vegetables are miracles and I enjoy being-part of that. When working within a miracle, my mind is clear. All I can think of is the beauty and goodness of life such as pleasant smells, pretty colors; beautiful butterflies.
Gardening is a moving mediation; good for my mind, body and soul.
When the sunsets in the evening, we sit in our garden, listening to music, having a glass of wine, feeling the sense of pride, of accomplishment. Excited to share the area with friends and family. It’s my passion and my source of spirituality.
Come June 2021, it will be 34 years I have lived in this great state of Arizona; this warm and consistently beautiful desert. The challenge for a midwestern girl to learn about desert gardening has been ongoing and I love it. There’s always something new and different to try. Over those last 34 years we’ve owned 7 homes, located in both Northern Phoenix and the greater South East Valley. The photos you will see here are actually mine from one of our yards.
Through trial and error, a few classes and long hours of reading, I can at long last feel as though I have ‘arrived’. The desert has become a part of me. I understand it.
If you are new here, in Phoenix suburbia, either a permanent resident or a winter visiting snowbird, and you are interested in desert gardening, I can help. Follow me as I talk you through your Phoenix landscaping experience. I hope you’ll enjoy this and take something away with each read.
I wish you pleasant planting experience.
