The Smart Packing Lady

Just Add Water

Late night arrivals…

Ever arrive somewhere and it’s late and no place open to eat?

Or, you don’t know your way around and it’s too dark and late to walk alone.

Or you’ve been flying all night and you just want to sleep!!!

Perhaps you are stuck on a layover and the airport doesn’t have 24-hour food service?

That’s why it’s necessary to ALWAYS carry a few items that can sustain you until you are able to get a decent meal.

If you are a meat eater then jerky or meat sticks are very good and don’t take up a lot of room. They do contain a lot of salt though, so consider this as flying and sitting for a lengthy timeframe already makes your feet swell.

We try to carry things that can be eaten on the spot such as a protein or cereal bars, but once we arrive at a hotel, (or anyplace actually), that may offer a cup of hot water then we are pretty set until we can get a nice healthy meal.

One of my favorites is this Miso Soup, pictured above.

Also, Oatmeal (sorry, you’ll have no milk, sugar or cinnamon)

Those packet drink mixes from Plexus and the Propel packets are the best as you just add to a bottle of water and shake. Replaces electrolytes and Vitamin B.

A popcorn packet is perfect if you have access to a microwave.

Carnation instant drink packets 👍🏼

Fruit strips/rollups or dried fruit 👍🏼

Unsalted Nuts 👍🏼

Lipton soup packs- tiny noodles so not as many carbs 👍🏼

Tuna-to-Go comes with 2 crackers and a spoon 👍🏼 or Tuna Creations are my fave-plenty of protein!! (but open alone as it does have an odor)

Tea- I always carry a tea bag or two. One Decaf for evening as it’s just relaxing, warm and a good way to end the day. I use a regular if needed, for morning. It refreshes and hydrates. Tea has some natural beneficial qualities that, more than likely, have been depleted after a super long day.

Products I don’t recommend are:

Cup of Soup- bulky, takes up room, hard to fit into a purse, too many carbs & salt.

PastaRoni- again bulky to pack and so full of carbs with the chunky style pasta and the hot water doesn’t always cook the thick noodles to be edible.

If you jump out to Amazon you will find some really useful utensils that fold up to the size of a car key fob and are super handy to keep with you for eating on the run.

I keep packets of instant foods in a zip lock as they tend to shuffle and tear in transit and nobody needs a bag of oatmeal or dried tea leaves dumped all over your purse or in your carry – on.

Staying hydrated with plenty of water & decaf herbal teas is the most important thing to do during and post travel. Also staying on top of your daily intake of Vitamin D to help you both sleep/relax and fight off cooties. Remember you’ll see no sunshine while in the plane-airport-hotels.

So stay healthy, satiated and hydrated so you can enjoy your travels.
