Late Summer Desert Flower Gardening
August is such a hot month. Many wonder what could possibly thrive in this intense heat. We do have the benefit of humidity from monsoons and flowers love that, but it is not a sure thing. If you are aching to do some gardening, there are still a few things you can work with during this scorching month.
Vincas of course are the standard summer flower of the Phoenix valley. Others that can live and grow during this time, are Zinnias, Blue Salvia, Sunflowers, Lisianthus, Angelonia and the Trumpet Vine. While not all of these flowers will last a long time, it is good to know that a couple of them make nice cut flowers to bring indoors, and that always looks nice and refreshing after enduring these horrible temps. All require watering in the early morning 3-4 times a week or when their top soil is dry. Over watering during August usually is not an issue. Our Lantana, Bottle Brush and Bougainvilleas will still flower. BONUS!! Note: Newly planted flowers with frequent watering are going to attract those thirsty bugs and other critters seeking moisture and shade, so be on the lookout for pests.
Lastly, if you are going to be gardening in this extreme heat, remember to take care of yourself, too. Sunblock and hats should be mandatory, plenty of water and electrolytes for hydration, limit your time outside and don’t be outdoors for extended times after 9 or 10 am. Always let someone know that you are going to be outside working in your garden so they can check on you.
