The Smart Packing Lady

More on Jewelry

With the holiday season upon us, many of us find we have more occasion to dress up. How fun to bring out our favorite pieces of jewelry.

Whether it’s the classic pieces or family heirlooms or just the holiday fun pieces that we wear this one special time a year.

The holiday season is also the time of year when we tend to travel.

I don’t know about you but when I visit family I like to take those items that have been handed down as heirlooms or the wonderful “Bling’ that has been gifted to me from dear family and/or friends. I love to wear my fun Christmas/Halloween or St. Paddy’s day costume jewelry (my Grandma Gear) when entertaining children.

When traveling, nobody wants to arrive to find their pieces tangled, especially those that are not top quality, (as they tend to tangle or crush easily).

A many years ago I come up with a way to combine and connect my pieces so they don’t tangle on my trips or get jumbled up in a suitcase.

I attached my chains to a small bag or clutch ? After attaching my necklaces to the bag, I tuck them inside the bag. I put the rings and earrings in a small mesh bag on the inside of my little clutch or purse, also. When I arrive at my destination, I take them out and hang them up; a door handle, drawer pulls or on a hanger in the closet works perfectly.

No more stressful detangling at the time of dressing, as it seems that jewelry is the last thing we put on before leaving and oh what at strain it is to find 3 necklaces all entwined together 😡🙍‍♀️😰.

My other option is a case I received many, many years ago as part of a gift from my husband. A nice folding necklace holder. Mine is from Zales, but I’m sure all jewelers probably have them. I find that I can put 3-4 flat/delicate necklaces in it and it lays flat in my carry on or upright in a large purse or computer bag so nothing gets tangled. I use it quite often. So if you love your jewelry and much as I do, contact your jeweler to see if you can obtain a necklace case. They won’t work well with clunky jewelry but for those elegant and flatter, or feminine pieces, it is perfect.. Also, I like to carry my jewelry in my carry-on, always.

We never know whether TSA or customs is going through our bags and once you arrive at your destination and find a piece missing, there is actually very little you can do about it and seldom does filing a complaint regain your lost item. Insurance companies are a ‘bear’ to deal with, only to add little or no results.

Happy Detangled Holiday Traveling.
